If you’re looking for a VERY basic overview with great entertainment, try Larry Gonick’s books. Don’t be put off by the fact that they’re like a graphic novel, he packs some good info in there.

History of the Universe III & History of the Modern World Part 1 would have what you’re looking for.

see Outline of The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.

Edward Gibbon (1737–1794).

The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (known popularly as The History) was written by English historian Edward Gibbon and published in six volumes. Volume I was published in 1776, and went through six printings. Volumes II and III were published in 1781; volumes IV, V, VI in 1788-89. The original volumes were published as quartos, a common publishing practice of the time. It stands as a major literary achievement of the 18th century because it was adopted as a model for the methodologies of modern historians. This led to Gibbon being called the first modern historian of Ancient Rome.

good book

There are many good historical novels. I’m sure there is more than one out there about Sir Francis Drake. “The Conquest of New Spain,” by Bernal Diaz, is an eyewitness account that’s positively gripping.
You could always go to amazon.com and in the search bar type “historical novels 15th-17th centuries.”
