1984 ford ranger truck speedometer?

is jerkng up and down no constant speed reading.is the guage gone bad or do i need to replacethe speedometer cable.

quick tests…disconnect cable from transmission and try to spin it. does it bind up or have a sticky spot? or does cable look rusty or bent? also inspect gear that drives the cable, make sure it isn’t missing any teeth. if so replace cable/gear. if not try switching out speedometer with another from a junkyard. this is very easy on the older rangers and relatively cheap.

It may be both the speedo and the cable. But I would lean more towards the cable itself. Often it’s mounting point is badly worn, or totally rusted away.

This isn’t fun but try cleaning and lubricating the cable first. Reach up behind the instrument cluster and unhook the cable and lower it until you can remove the cable (core). Clean it with gasoline or solvent and then lube it with some light oil preferably transmission fluid and reinstall it.
