What good workbooks can I get a fifth grader to improve his reading comprehension?

Anna Banana asked:

He got terrible marks in reading comprehension in a city wide test. Can you suggest any workbooks I can buy for him?
Maybe also any CDs that can help?

Allison Says:

I recommend the Wordly Wise textbooks. They come in many different levels and help with vocabulary, analogies, and reading comprehension. There is a long essay at the end of each chapter with twenty questions which must be answered. That should help!

Bob Says:

I would focus on highly motivational books that will make him WANT to read — akin to coating the broccoli with chocolate. Comic books, magazines, driver’s manual, books that deal with things he’s very interested in (motorcycles, electronics, pets, etc.). Reading comp results from practicing reading. Also, be sure your son sees you reading. He’ll get the subtle message that reading is important. Keep newspapers around the house for him to pick up. Get a sub to Reader’s Digest. Immerse him in words!
