Reading Comprehension?

Babar R asked:

To increase my reading comprehension level, is it better to read a book that’s exciting or a book that’s boring?

It would be better to read something exciting. You’re more involved with it, and will thus remember it better. Once you’re in that comprehending mode, you can apply it to boring materials, and get more out of them.

To improve your reading comprehension, the best reading material is . . .

1. something you find interesting
2. a topic you already know something about
3. a “comfortable” level in terms of vocabulary; not too challenging

If it’s something you find boring, it will be difficult to stay focused. Even if it seems interesting, if it’s a topic you know absolutely nothing about, there will be too much new stuff for you to comprehend and so it’s not suitable. If the reading level is too challenging, you’ll be using a lot of your “brain” just figuring out the vocabulary and not have much left for the meaning of the passage as a whole.

One that’s exciting. Reading comprehension is increased by your being able to make pictures in your head about the topic. If you are bored, you will daydream, and not make the pictures in your imagination.

I find that books like adventure stories (war scenes, sinking boats) are a bit too complicated to visualize easily. Maybe choose an interesting book, but one with lots of conversations that are interesting, and some action, too. Maybe slow action, like spies sneaking up on people, or a book like “Into the Wild”, or “Black Like Me” , or “Old Yeller”, or “The Call of the Wild”. A book where things happen, but not too quickly.
