Should I retain my 2nd grader because he is barely passing math and reading because of comprehension?

ldperry3 asked:

His teachers do not think he is ready for the 3rd grade, especially because if he does not pass the TAKS test in the 3rd grade, he will have to be retained then and it would be harder on him. Because he DID actually pass, it would have to be a voluntary retainment by me. Could his reading comprehension be improved enough with tutoring over the summer?

I remember when i was younger my lttle brother had the same problem. if you allow your child to pass and continue on, he will do nothing but struggle the whole year., my parents chose to hold my brother back and even now he says that it was the best thing for him. He ended up graduating with an honor roll diploma. If you want to get a tutor, look into a program that specializes in it, not just a teenager from down the street. The programs tend to focus more where your child will need the help.

I would retain him, and put him in a summer class to help him.

Pushing him ahead when he is not ready will only put him farther behind and each year it will get worse. You want the very best for him and getting a good education and comprehending his education is of the utmost importance.

Good luck, Jackie b

There are lots of things to consider when retaining a child. How old is he? older or younger than classmates…size?
If he is having difficulty with math and reading comprehension it would be beneficial for him to repeat 2nd grade. You don’t want to send him to 3rd grade if he is struggling. He will hit the wall and give up. Think of it as gifting your child another year of development. Good luck!
