Do speed reading courses improve comprehension?

David S asked:

My speed is about average, but I would like to improve my reading comprehension. Courses like Evelyn Wood claim to improve both speed and comprehension. Can anyone speak from experience?

We had to take speed reading when I was in 9th grade. I graduated high school in 1973 and still read faster than anyone I work with. I believe it did help me with speed and comprehension. It does help with work productivity.

I took one of those speed reading courses in middle school. My mom enrolled me in it thinking it would help me do better in my classes. Me personally, my comprehension was no better than it was before. I just read faster. The comprehension level was the same.
