How do you start to open Comic book store?

Ramon W asked:

I want to open a Comic book store in a town that has none. I don’t have any backing or great credit.

La Dinosaurio Says:

You’re going to have real trouble with the first two “backing or great credit.”, but all is not lost.

Before you do anything, did you talk with Diamond yet. They are the distributor for all comics (you don’t ever buy direct from Marvel, DC, Image and the others). Get the ball rolling with them, see what you need and what they are asking you to do.

Second, did you get a business license yet? Do you have a partner or is it just you. Talk to somebody (other then on the Internet) to see if you need to get a LLC, Inc.. stuff like that.

Did you write up a business plan yet? This one your need to learn how to do, but at least sit down and write all your thoughts down.

Have you looked at any storefronts in your town? This is free so go out and do it. Ask a realtor to show you some places, get an idea of cost and what kind of space you need. Also, go to other towns that have comic shops and try and figure out what they are paying. Also, how is the town you want to put the store in doing, lots of empty shops, always busy during the day, school near it (this is huge, can kids walk to the store?)

Now, you said you have no backing or great credit. Not much you can do. First overall you need to bring up your credit, that’s a must and will be a problem for you until you do. Second, do you have a great idea or plan for the store, try talking to other comic shop owners and see if any of them want to expand. Maybe they will partner with you?

Have you tried looking at web sites that are not attached to a store? Maybe one of them is in your area and again would like to partner up. Could save them some storage space and work out for them to have a location to send customer.

LAST, if none of this works but you can get in with Diamond. How about making your own web site and working the conventions (local and out of state) build up some capital and go at it.

Owning your own store is work, you’re going to have to eat and sleep comics.
